Little is known of Alexander as a young man. He was baptized at Wilmot Trinity Anglican church in Middleton, Kings Co., Nova Scotia.

Eliza's father was Alexander Patterson, her mother was Elizabeth Ovilvie. Eliza was born in Aylesford in 18 March 1803. The Pattersons were early pioneer settlers in the Aylesford township of Nova Scotia. The family roots go back to Armagh, Ireland, arriving in Halifax in 1770. After Alexander's death, she married Moses Orr of Aylesford.
