Per newspaper clipping: 1933 - C.C. Hurlbut Granted Divorce

Clifton C. Hurlbut of this city (Seymour, CT) an employee of the railroad, was granted a divorce from Ethel Seebeck Hurlbut yesterday by Judge Newell Jennings of the superior court. The decree was granted on the grounds of desertion after Hurlbut’s mother-in-law (Florence R. (Benedict) Seebeck) had testified that her daughter had left the petitioner. The couple married on Oct. 12, 1915. On the night of Sept. 21, 1926 Hurlbut told the court his wife left their home to attend a meeting. She never came back and now lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. The only explanation Hurlbut has for the desertion is that his wife preferred New York to Connecticut. Mrs. Seebeck had tears in her eyes as she left the witness stand after testifying that her daughter left her husband seven years ago.

Ethel M (Seebeck) and Clifton C Hurlbut had one daughter, Florence aka Bettie Hurlbut b ca 1921 CT, res with grandparents Henry and Florence (Benedict) Seebeck in 1930 census.

Florence’s Final Years

OBITUARY: 21Dec1933 - FLORENCE SEEBECK CLAIMED BY DEATH

Well known Society Woman, and Matron of Olive Chapter, O. E. S., Died Today.

Mrs. Florence R. Seebeck, wife of J. Henry Seebeck, died this morning at her home, 31 Union Street, after a comparatively short illness. Mrs. Seebeck, while not being as well as usual for the past month was taken quite ill a week ago, and from the first her condition became serious and early in the week she seemed to grow worse. All that medical skill was able to do together with constant professional nursing availed but little and yesterday her condition became grave, and she passed away at 5 o’clock this morning.

The report of her death cast gloom over the town. Mrs. Seebeck was unusually well known due in a measure to her church and society activities. She was a born leader among women, and with the qualifications that she possessed and which were displayed in the many fraternities she was affiliated with she was chosen times without number to positions of honor. Her leadership was sought by the membership who cherished the labor she expended in their behalf and who marveled at the ease with which she assumed any fraternal duty.

Mrs. Seebeck was at the time of her death worthy matron of Olive chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and was to have been installed at the last meeting, but her illness caused the installation exercises to be deferred. She was a member of Evergreen temple, Pythian Sisters, Orient lodge, Shepherds of Bethlehem, the Woman’s Relief corps, all of Seymour, Order of Amaranth, Ansonia, and the White Shrine, New Haven. In all of these organizations Mrs. Seebeck was ever active, and when not, prominently occupied in official capacities she made an effort to divide her time among them. She had frequently held offices where her capabilities in leadership were brought out.

Mrs. Seebeck was a native of Wilton, this state, and had resided in Seymour for the past ten years. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Ethel, of Brooklyn, NY: one granddaughter, Bettie Hurlburt: two sisters, Mrs. Alice Hoffmann, of Warren, and Mrs. A. O. Dudley, of Madison, and one brother, Frank Benedict, of Bridgeport.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Ward funeral home on Pine Street. Rev. Edward A. Jones of the congregational church, will officiate, and interment will be made in the family plot in Union cemetery.
