The Parents of Elias

Smedley and Catherine Benedict and family left Richmond Twp., Lennox and Addington County and arrived in Sydenham Township, Grey County, sometime between 1851 and 1857. They settled on Concession B, Lot 3 of Sydenham Twp. Which, I think, (yet to be proven) is very close to Balaclava, a picturesque little hamlet in the midst of the Highland-Scotch settlement, planed by the land-agent as a convenient place of business for settlers close to the line of St. Vincent Twp. It seems in 1865, Daniel Benedict, A. Benedict (possibly Ard) and James Benedict were all living there, (this taken from, A History of the County Of Grey by E. L. Marsh, from page 436. Reproduced from The Gazetter of the County published by W. E. Smith of Owen Sound in 1865). Smedley at this time was 65 years old and the boys were in charge of the property. After Smedley's death in 1867, Ard, James and Catherine moved to Chesley, while Daniel took over the farm.

Elias' Early Years

Elias, settled the Dakota Territory or thereabouts as a young man in the 1860's, no further record1.

Elias and Margery

Elias most likely met Margery McMullen, the daughter of John and Emily, married her about July 26, 1863 and after a short time, moved on to settle in the USA.

It seems all five children were born in the USA. Emma Jane, Elias' second born 1866, in United States seems to have came back to Canada and at age 17, married David N. Burley a farmer, son of Allison and Emma Jane Burley in Collingwood, Nottawasaga Twp., Simcoe County, Ontario on May 02, 1883. On May 06, 1884 they had a son, James Garfield Burley, in Collingwood, Simcoe County. (at this time David Burley is listed as a Labourer). This info was found in Ancestry.com, but no other traces after this. They probably returned to the USA.

A 32 year old Elias Benedict and his 23 year old wife Margery Benedict and three young children, those children being Anna age 6, Emily Jane age 3 and William age 1, appear on the 1870 USA Federal Census in Johnson, Iowa. Then by 1880 they are in Nebraska.

Elias and Margery Benedict and five children appear on the 1880 USA Federal Census living in Polk, Nebraska. The same place as his oldest brother Caleb was living at that time.
