The Parents of Mary Emily Benedict

Mary’s Early Years

Mary Benedict was, according to her marriage and death records, born in Richmond Township, Lennox and Addington County, Upper Canada (now Ontario).

Mary can be found on the 1851 Census with her parents and siblings, in Thurlow Township, Hastings County, she was listed as seven years old.

In 1861, an eighteen year old Mary Benedict can be found living with Cornealious & Annie Badgly and their two very young children still in Thurlow Township. By this time Mary's mother, Rachel Bush-Benedict had died and her father, William, had left Canada, remarried and had started a new family in the USA.

It appears Mary had been separated from her siblings after their mother's death as each of the girls can be found living with a different family.

Mary and John

Mary Benedict married John Spear in 1864. John Spear was a relatively new immigrant to Canada, arriving from England in 1857. He was the eldest son of Matthew and Rebecca Spear of Laneast, Cornwall, England.

In the late 1860's, after the birth of their first two daughters, Mary and John themselves went to the USA, their son John was born in Missouri in 1871. However by 1880, Mary & John and their growing family had returned to Canada, and to Hastings County, taking up residence in Sidney Township.
