The Parents of John Seymour

John Seymour's parents, John Craighead and Letitia Cochrane, were married on 27 Mar 1889 at Warkworth, Ontario. They moved into the 150 acres farm that John had purchased on 22 Dec 1888 at Lot 20, Concession 9 of Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., at Godolphin, approximately 10 kilometres west of the town of Campbellford, Ontario. Here, they had 7 children of which the first 3 died as infants. John Seymour was the second oldest of the surviving children (4 boys). John and Letitia sold this farm on 1 Feb 1905 and moved the family into Campbellford. Then on 3 Jan 1907, they purchased an 164 acres farm on the north halves of Lots 25 & 26 of Concession 9 in Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., on the east side of Stirling, Ontario. John died on 13 Apr 1923 and was buried in the family plot at Stirling Cemetery. Letitia lived another 20 years on the farm with son Percy and his wife Nora until 29 Aug 1943 when she died and was buried in the Stirling Cemetery.

John Seymour’s Early Years

John and his 3 brothers lived their early lives on the farm near Godolphin and attended a small one room country school. His education continued in Campbellford and then in Stirling.

John and Maude

Maude Cook was born in Sunton, Wiltshire, England, on 03 Feb 1903. Her father died suddenly from meningitis when Maude was only 2 years old. Her mother was expecting a fifth child at the time and was unable to look after her family. Thus Maude was admitted to the Barnardo Home and was sent to Canada. She was living with a family in Stirling, Ontario, where she met her future husband, John Seymour Craighead.

After their marriage on 08 Dec 1920, they bought a 50 acres farm in January 1921 on lot 9, concession 4 in Rawdon Twp., Hastings Co., which they operated for some 3 years before selling it in 1924. They moved to Smith Falls, Ontario, where John worked at the Cockshut manufacturing company until he retired.

The Final Years for John and Maude

Maude died on 24 Sept 1958 at Smith Falls. John continued living there until he retired and later moved to Marmora, Ontario, where he died on 19 Jan 1983. Both were buried in the Smith Falls Cemetery.
