origin of the Dafoe family goes back to the early 18th century, when
Daniel Thevou, a husbandman or vinedresser, his wife Marianne, and two children Maria Anna and Abraham, emigrated from Switzerland or Germany as part of the Great Palatine Migration. The family left Rotterdam in 1709, sailing to the New World via London. Marianne did not survive, so Daniel arrived at the Hudson River with two children to care for in a foreign land.
His son
Abraham married Anna Maria Catharina Reiffenberg and lived in nearby Rhinebeck in New York, raising five sons and five daughters.
The Canadian Dafoe family were United Empire Loyalists and consisted of Abraham's son
John Ernst Dafoe and his wife Mary and children. John and Mary raised their family in the southwestern corner of Vermont in the community of Pownal, close to (now) New York and Massachusetts states. Like most of Abraham's children, John chose the British side in the American Revolutionary War. He and his family suffered the loss of their property and emigrated to the British colony to the north.
