Rodney’s Early Years

Rodney Thomas Smith was born September 12, 1894 in St. Raymond, Quebec. Between 1895 and 1908 the family moved to Grandville, Vermont. Several of Rodney's siblings were born in Vermont and in 1909 the family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire where Rodney's last sibling Winnifred was born. In about 1912 the family moved to Davidson, Saskatchewan.

Rodney Smith and Emma Dewey

On November 25, 1913 Rodney Smith married Emma Dewey in Davidson, Saskatchewan. Between 1915 and 1928 Rodney and Emma had five children, only one girl. There was never much money but the children never expected much as they didn't have to want for anything. They always had good food and warm clothing and a warm house so didn't need money like the children do nowadays. When Rodney went to get groceries in Davidson, the grocer put a free bag of candy in for the children and that was their treat for the week. The children made their own entertainment; there was always an old organ in the house and although there wasn't money for lessons, they spent a lot of happy time at it. The family lost their house to a fire in 1933; Rodney and Emma were away at the time and so everything was lost. The neighbors were really good for miles around, as they set the family up again with everything they needed right down to the sad irons for ironing clothes. They held a benefit dance and gave the family the money for anything they might have missed. It was all used articles and things the family continued to use for years after. Rodney & Emma retired to British Columbia in 1956. Rodney Smith passed away December 14, 1968 at the age of 74 in Langley, British Columbia.
