Per Alta Blanche Benedict Family Records: Walter enlisted in the marines during the Spanish American War and was stationed at Brooklyn, New York, and Norfolk, Virginia. He was on the SS Maine but was sent ashore just before it blew up. This was told to his son Roy, and there is a picture of him in uniform. Unable to obtain official records. Per DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY -- NAVAL HISTORICAL CENTER - The battleship arrived on 25 January 1898. Spanish authorities in Havana were wary of American intentions, but they afforded Captain Charles Sigsbee and the officers of Maine every courtesy. In order to avoid the possibility of trouble, Maine's commanding officer did not allow his enlisted men to go on shore. From Connecticut Divorces: Superior Court Records for Litchfield County, 1752-1922 Benedict, Ella (Gilmore) of Warren m. 21Jan 1869 Star Benedict - physical abuse - intemperance - two minor children, Florence (4) Alice (2). Petitioned 7Jul1883 - discontinued 8May1890. Note: No mention of children Francis (Frank), Mary, Burton, or Walter in petition, they were also minor children. Per son Roy: About 1920 Walter told his son Roy to get out. Roy went to his aunt Mamie's (Lenhard), who lived on the Vogelbale Place on Lake Stella. Roy had a cow which he took with him. Later, Mamie, Bert and Roy went to a little show in Darwin, saw his father Walter. Walter asked Roy to come home to water the horses as he was going to be in Litchfield (MN). Roy did and went back to Mamie's. Walter never came back again, and that's the last his son ever saw or heard of him. I was a little girl when he left Connecticut for the West, but I remember him, and knew that for many years he and my brother, Clarence Lewis Benedict corresponded.
