James' Early Years
James and Lizzie

James moved to Stratford in 1904. There on November 07, 1906 he married Elizabeth Mary Harvey, the daughter of the late George Harvey and Elizabeth Mary Longfoot. She was lovingly known as Lizzie. Pearl Elizabeth was born May 04, 1908 in Stratford, but died of Tonsillitis on April 10, 1909 in Stratford, according to Stratford Archives.
James was then born on October 29, 1909, and Marjorie May was born in Stratford on October 10, 1913, but she too died, April 10, 1916 in Stratford of acute Indigestion, according to Stratford Archives. This leaving only James to carry on the Benedict name.

Stratford Beacon Herald; --- OBITUARY of James Benedict
A native of Chesley, James Benedict died at his home, 501 Ontario Street, Friday evening, following a heart attack. Mr. Benedict had been in failing health for five years. He was born in 1879, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Benedict. When seven years of age he moved to Woodstock where he resided for eighteen years. For several years while in Woodstock he drove the fire team for the Woodstock Fire Hall. He came to Stratford in 1904 where two years later he married Elizabeth Mary Harvey, who survives him and resides at 501 Ontario street. For many years he was employed as a cabinet maker in the Stratford Chair Company Ltd., and the Bell Company. Ten years ago he entered the trucking business until five years ago he when ill health forced him to retire. The departed man was a member of St. Jame's Anglican Church. Surviving besides his wife are one son James William, 533 Downie Street; two brothers, Russel, Ruthilda, Saskachewan and Charles of Preston, five sisters Mrs. M. Hodges, Woodstock, Mrs William Koehler, Sarnia; Mrs. Edith Weiler, Hamilton; Mrs. Harry Morgan, Hamilton; Mrs. Stanley McFadgen, Ruthilda, Saskachewan. There are two grandchildren. A private funeral service will be held at his late residence, 501 Ontario Street, on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock followed by a service in St. Jame's Anglican Church at 3:00o'clock, the Rev. F.Gwynne Lightbourne officiating. Interment will follow in Avondale Cemetery.

Stratford Beacon Harold; --- Mrs. James Benedict,77, died early this morning at her home, 232 William Street. She was the Former Elizabeth Mary Harvey. Mrs. Benedict was born in 1878 at 551 Ontario Street., the residence of her parents the late George Harvey and his wife the former Elizabeth Longfoot. Mrs. Benedict received her elementary education in Stratford Public Schools, and later attended Stratford Collegiate Institute. For a number of years she and her husband, whom she married 51 years ago, operated a grocery store on Ontario Street. Mr. Benedict died 13 years ago. She was a member of St. Jame's Anglican Church. Surviving are one son James William Benedict, at home; and four grandchildren. Five brothers and three sisters predceased her. The body will rest at the Heinbuck funeral home, 156 Albert St., until Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. when a service will be held there. Ven. Archdeacon F. G. Lightbourne, St. Jame's Anglican Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Avondale Cemetery.
