The Final Years for Smedley

Per CHESLEY CITIZEN PASSES SATURDAY; ---- Chesley March 01, 1948 Smedley Benedict, a life-long resident of Chesley, passed away at his home here on Saturday after a short illness. The deceased, who was in his 78th year, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ard Benedict. He was never married. Surviving to mourn are three brothers, John of Vancouver, David in Wingham and Gordon of Hamilton, two sisters, Mrs. Howard Hurlbut of New Hamburg and Mrs. Gerald Valk of Chesley. The late Mr. Benedict was a furniture worker by trade but had been retired for a number of years. In the region he was a Baptist. He belonged to the Masonic Order and to the Canadian Order of Foresters.

On June 03, 1948 Smedley's estate paid $16.00 for one plot in the Chesley Cemetery. Standing at father Ard's Grave with back to road, Smedley's unmarked plot is about 6 rows back and one row to the right of his father's site.
