The Family of Maria Anna Devoe
Henrich Michel came with his father to New York in the Great Palatine Migration, 1710; they were naturalized as citizens in Albany on January 17, 1716. He was a tenant and debtor of the Livingston family at Livingston Manor, NY. He died sometime between 1751 and 1761.
Maria Anna came with her parents in the same migration. By the time of her Lutheran confirmation in 1729, she was known as Anna Maria.
Her second husband, Johannes Mathias Lawyer, was a Palatine whose surname was originally Lauer. He was a merchant and surveyor of Schoharie district, New York, where he was one of the first white settlers (about 1718) and owned a large acreage. He became a justice of the peace for Albany county in 1758, and was a deacon of the local Lutheran church. It is said that his sons were offended because he was about 80 when he married Maria. It was a short marriage because he died in March 1762, leaving one-sixth of his estate to Maria's daughter Hannah.
