Medicine Hat, Alberta
I have created an on-line book called
What's in a name ... Medicine Hat?. The document is a listing of place names (streets, parks, etc.) in the Medicine Hat which have been named in honour of a person or family that has contributed to the community and is a tribute to them. The book is intended to be a work in progress, with additions, changes or corrections always possible. Click on the following link to get there.
Below, I have provided a bit of history and facts about the 'Hat as well as a number of links that may be of use.
Medicine Hat, known to many as "The Hat", is a city located in the southeastern part of the province of Alberta, Canada.
It is situated on the Trans-Canada Highway about 300 kilometers (180 miles) southeast of Calgary and is also at the eastern terminus of the Crowsnest Highway. Lethbridge is about 168 kilometers (102 miles) west of the 'Hat along that route. The State of Montana is due south and it is about 160 kilometers (100 miles) to the US border. The South Saskatchewan River flows through the 'Hat. Nearby towns considered part of the Medicine Hat area include Dunmore, Seven Persons, Redcliff, and Irvine. The Cypress Hills, Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park and Elkwater Lake are a relatively short distance to the south and southeast of the city.
Medicine Hat's major claim to fame is Rudyard Kipling's famous line "all hell for a basement" referring to the vast reserves of natural gas beneath it.
The most recent census (2008) indicates a population in excess of 60,000.
Did you know every shuttle flight takes a little of Medicine Hat with it? The Black colour in the tiles on the underside heat shield of the Shuttle and many o-rings in the rockets have as one of it's critical ingredients the carbon black from CanCarb in Medicine Hat.
And did you know that Medicine Hat has the most precipitation free days in Canada with an average of 265 dry days a year.
