Asahel’s Early Years

Asabel was the only known child of Obadiah Benedict with possibly three brothers and three sisters. Born in New York State, he was a farmer there before removing to Ohio.

During the second contest for American Relief from the British Tyrany [War of 1812] he became a teamster driving oxen and carrying stores and ammunition and using a musket on various occasions. He participated in the Battle of Tippecanoe and during the War became very strongly attached to General W. H. Harrison (later President Harrison) with whom he at one time swapped horses.1

Asahel and Evelina

Asahel Benedict married Miss Evelina Moore, a native of Connecticut, and a daughter of Chandler Moore, of England, who served in the Colonial Army during the Revolution, and was wounded by a sabre cut at the battle of Brandywine.

This couple was united in marriage in Ohio, and permanently resided in that State, having been among the earliest settlers of Franklin County. They were the parents of nine children.

Four sons grew to manhood, and all served in the Union Army during the Rebellion.B

The Final Years for Asahel

By 1850, Asahel had been widowed for eleven years and was now possibly living with his son Henry's inlaws, the Andrews, at Sharon, Franklin co., Ohio (per 1850 Federal census). Ten years later, he was living with his son Anson and family in Perry, Franklin co., Ohio (per 1860 Federal census).

Evelina died in 1839, and Asahel survived until 1881, when he passed away at the age of eighty-nine years.B
