ZADOCK6 (Abijah,5 Matthew,4 Daniel,3 Daniel,2 Thomas1)
b. Aug. 6, 1791; m. July 3, 1823, Sarah, dau. James and Elizabeth (Hopkins) Tibbetts of Huntersland, Schoharie Co. He removed with his father to Albany (now Greene) Co., thence to Westerlo, and finally settled, in 1819, in Berne. He was engaged in mercantile business about 25 years. Was an elder in the Reformed church. He d. March 2, 1870, at West Berne; we quote from closing remarks at his funeral, by his pastor, Rev. E. Miller; "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; for the end of that man is peace." (Psalms xxxvii, 37.) "Mr. Benedict needs no eloquence of man or any delineation on our part to put forth his character in its true light, so as to appropriate the text. For an age he has been known to us in every capacity. His life and character has been commented upon in your family circles, and in your interchange of neighborly courtesies. To illustrate the nobleness of man, and the reality of the Christian religion, he has stood as a polished column, among the fallen, decayed timbers of corrupt society and frail human nature around him. His name was a common synonym for integrity in things pertaining to God and man. * * * His religion was without ostentation, it was continuous, faithful and onward, as a living reality within him. He was unselfish, perfect and upright in all his business transactions. All were impressed with his dignified bearing and gentlemanly demeanor. We all felt we must be respectful in his presence. * * * The church and the community at large have sustained a painful loss, but there is left the consolation of a heavenly legacy, of his many Christian virtues and precious memory." Footnotes
Berne is a town in Albany County, New York. The Town of Berne (originally spelled "Bern") was created in 1795 from part of the Town of Rensselaerville. In 1822 the north half of Berne was spun off to form the new Town of Knox.
The earliest settlers were Palatine German refugees. Settlement began before 1750. At that time it was called Beaver Dam (also spelled Beaverdam). The settlers were actually squatters, since in the 18th and most of the 19th centuries, Berne was part of the Rensselaerwyck estate. The head of the Van Rensselaer family was the patroon who owned all the land on which the tenants in the Hudson Valley lived, and used feudal leases to maintain control of the region. Before the Revolutionary War, the patroons acted as feudal lords, with the right to make laws.
