---+ Almon F. Benedict _Family reference:_ 352.23A | :born: |Born |18 Oct 1848 at Hungerford twp., Hastings co., Ontario| | :married: |Married|11 July 1876 to Emma Dunn at Madoc, Hastings co., Ontario| | :died: |Died |21 April 1905 at Las Vegas, San Miguel co., New Mexico| Parents of Almon: * Father: [[ArdBenedict1795][Ard Benedict]] * Mother: Hannah Pringle Children: 1. Harry Fletcher Benedict; b. 12 Nov 1876 1. Myron Clayton Benedict; b. 17 June 1885 1. Almon Roswell Benedict; b. 15 Feb 1889; d. 10 Nov 1930 ---+++_The Parents of Almon Benedict_ Given Almon Benedict was born in 1848, and by then Hannah Pringle-Benedict, his supposed mother, was 50 years old, it is a distinct possibility that Almon might have been born out of wedlock to one of Hannah and Ard's older daughters (Susan perhaps) and raised by Ard and Hannah as their own child? ---+++_Almon’s Early Years_ Almon Benedict has so far not been found, with any of his family members, on the 1861 Census? Where he was, as a 12 or 13 year old boy, remains a mystery. He shows up, as a 21 year old young man, on the 1871 Census, in the home of his brother Charles Benedict and Charles' wife Martha who were living in Thurlow township, Hastings county. Almon marries in 1876 and Ard and Hannah are listed as his parents. ---+++_Almon and Emma_ Almon Benedict married Emma Dunn in 1876 and it appears they left Canada not too long after their marriage. In 1880, according to the USA Federal Census, Almon, Emma and their young son Harry were living in Kansas, the point of origin of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad (A.T.& S.F. Railroad). By the 1900 USA Federal census, Almon Benedict and his expanded family were living in Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico, only a couple of blocks from division headquarters of the railroad. Apparently, Las Vegas, New Mexico became a boomtown, from the time the railroad arrived in 1879 until its division headquarters was relocated in the 1920s. ---+++_The Final Years for Almon_ Almon was a carpenter with the railroad for over 20 years. Due to an illness Almon left the railroad in 1900 and he and his family moved to California, however, according to Almon's obituary, he was brought back to Las Vegas, in 1905 to die at home. Almon Benedict is buried in the Masonic Cemetery, Las Vegas, San Miguel county, New Mexico. ---+++_Footnotes_ From Almon's Obit "Mr. Benedict was born near Belville, Ont. October 18, 1848. He was married in 1876 to the esteemed lady who survives him. The family moved to the United States in 1879 and to Las Vegas in June 1883. Mr Benedict was made a Free Mason in Liberty Kansas transferring his membership to Las Vegas. He was a member of the Royal Arch chapter of the Kinghts Templar of the Eastern Star and of th A.O.U.W. He held responsible offices in all the orders to which he belonged and ever fulfilled his duties with the ability and fidelity which characterized his whole life. He was insured in the Mutual Reserve Life Insurance company and the A.O. U.W. Deceased was a model in his private as he was in his public life. He was generous and frank in disposition devotedly attached to his home and family, of winning personality and of the most exemplary character" Emma Dunn-Benedict, Almon's wife, lived on for many more years in California. She died the 22 March 1937 in Los Angeles, California and she is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California. -- Main.JimBenedict - 23 Nov 2005
