"Shortly after his birth, the family removed to Bridgeport, where his father died before he was five years old. His mother was left with a very small patrimony. The ordinary way would have been to husband this and set the boy at work as soon as possible, but she appreciated the value of education for this, her only child, and resolved to use her limited means, mainly, for that purpose. From the necessity of the case, she was extremely economical in everything excepting books and education for her boy. He remained with her until he was twelve years old (using diligently all the educational advantages of the town), when he was sent to classical school, at Danbury, to prepare for college. He entered Yale in the autumn of 1826, and remained there about two years, when failing health compelled his mother, on the advice of the physician, to withdraw him. He was then sent abroad; returned in about a year restored in health, and commenced the study of law in the office of J.W. Girard, Esq., of New York City. He was admitted to the bar in November, 1832. He soon formed a business connection with Charles O'Conor, Esq., at a salary of $500 a year, and on this assured income, he was married. Not long afrer, he was taken into partnership by Mr O'Conor, with whom he remained about two years. Then a wealthy relative proposed a lucrative engagement in the mercantile line, which, with Mr O'Conor's approbation, he accepted. After two years experience in mercantile business, ending with the crisis and crash of 1837, he was glad to return to his old profession, and to his partnership connection with Mr O'Conor. In 1839 he commenced alone, and, in 1843, Andrew Boardman, who had studied with him, became his partner. The firm of Benedict & Boardman is one of the most respected and prosperous, as it is now, one of the oldest law firms in the city of New York. Owing to an impulsive temperament, Mr Benedict's decisions are made promptly, yet, on account of his quick perceptions, they are almost invariably correct. Of late years he has practiced but little at the bar, but his advise and counsel has been earnestly sought in a number of important cases. His cheerful disposition has made many a despondent client leave his office with a lighter heart. His soundness of Judgement and thorough integrity, combined with an untiring industry, have given him the confidence of all with whom he comes in contact. While a student at law in 1831, away from his home and its restraints, and while exposed to the perils and temptations of a great city, he united with the Presbyterian church in Laight street, under the pastoral care of Rev Dr. Cox. Since that period he has been an active Christian man, identified with what heretofore has been called the new school Presbyterian church; for many years an elder in the Madison Square Presbyterian church, also a member of the general assembly's board on church erection, and for many years its treasurer and secretary. He was, also, for a protracted period, a member of the general assembly's education Committee. These various duties were performed with that energy and skill which is habitual to the man. A close and critical student of the Bible, his best thoughts and hours of leisure have been bestowed upon it, and few have acquired greater skill and ability than he in explaining and applying the Word of God, or few are listened to with more delight and attention. Now (1870) in his 60th year, and in the enjoyment of good health, with ample means, and surrounded with nearly thirty children and grandchildren, he is spending the evening of his life in quiet and comfort at his delightful home at Audubon Park on the banks of the Hudson. When the war broke out she found full scope for her warm heart, in visiting the hospitals and waiting on the wounded soldiers, reading to them, writing their letters, and in carrying them delicacies to tempt their capricious appetites. It is not yet two yeas since she entered upon the duties of a pastor's wife, with all the zeal of her earnest nature, laboring in season and out of season. With particular earnestness did she strive to win young souls to Jesus, yet with patient humility, bearing the bodily weakness that retarded her work, remembering that 'they also serve, who only stand and wait,' and so, she went trustingly 'from the shadow of this worlds's night into Gods's pure sunshine bright.'" <BR>
