Coroner Orders Inquest in Case of Pond Company Night Watchman Found Dead In Plant
(Special to the Register)

Clinton, Sept 3 -- An inquest is to be held this afternoon into the death of *Augustus O. Dudley* of Hammonassett, night watchman at the factory of Pond's Extract Company, who was found dead at his post on Monday night. Coroner Lowndes A. Smith, will conduct the inquest to determine the manner in which he met his death, a question that seems surrounded with considerable mystery. 

It was at first thought that he had died from a heart attack, but it was found that his body was bruised, and that his arms had been badly scraped, while below the loading platform on which the body was discoverd was found small iron bar. This was taken by Coroner Smith, until the investigation should be completed.

On Monday night, Mr. Dudley went on duty as usual, at 8 o'clock, and Louis Terray, another watchman at the factory, left simultaneously to go to the moving pictures. Upon his return, he discovered Dudley lying on the platform. 

Believing him merely unconscious, he placed Dudley in a chair, then called the superintendent, R.B. Lively, and Dr. David A. Fox. Dr Fox, upon his arrival, found that Dudley had been dead about two hours, and the body was removed to the chapel of Carl Swan in East Main Street.

The bruises and scrapes on Dudley's person were at first believed to have been incurred when he dragged himself along the platoform when semi-conscious from the heart attack, but Coroner Smith made a preliminary investigation yesterday, and then ordered an autopsy performed by Medical Examiner Fox. Eight witnesses will be questioned at the inquest to be held this afternoon.

Dudley lived at the entrance to Hammonassett Beach, with his wife and one grandchild, who survive him. He had been for many years an employee of the Pond Extract Company, and was well known in Clinton. He is reported to have been subject to heart attacks.

It is said by family that Mary and her husband sold land to the State of CT that was turned into Hammonasset Beach State Park, 923 acres, 2 miles East of Madison, off US 1; 1 mile S off I-95, exit 62. This is Connecticut’s largest waterfront park.
