Catherine Benedict 1837- ---+++_The Pioneer of Clinton County, Michigan_ *History of Clinton County, Michigan* Hiram Benedict and his brother in law Timothy H Pettit, accompanied by their families, Nelson Benedict, an unmarried brother of Hiram, and another young man named John Brown, came from Saratogy county, NY and settled upon what has been called since as "Benedict's Plains" in the autumn of 1837, thus becoming the first settlers after Mr Campau. Their families found shelter under the hospitable Mr Campau, until their own first dwellings were ready for occupancy. Hiram Benedict purchased of the government of the west half of Section 9 5Nov1835, and soon afterwards became in possession of the two east 80 acre lots of Section 8.The spring following his settlement (1838) he was elected supervisor of the newly organized township of Wandougan, and afterward, without changing his residence, served as the first supervisor of the townships of Lebanon, Bengal, and Essex. He was an able man, a good citizen, and highly respected. His aged father, Hiram Sr. and his mother also removed to this township where they passed the remainder of their days. Hiram Benedict Sr had served in the War of 1812-14. THADDEUS5 (Thaddeus,4 Thomas,3 James,2 Thomas1) <BR> b. Aug. 14, 1749; m. July 12, 1775, Deborah, dau. Col. John Read of Reading, Ct. She was b. 1751, and d. --. Her father, Col. Read, was a Revolutionary officer. The town of Reading derived its name from him. He had at R., a park of ten or fifteen acres, in which he kept deer. He d. 1786, aged 85. Thaddeus Benedict grad. at Yale College, 1773; lawyer by profession; probate clerk, in 1776; removed to Reading; selectman, Feb. 13, 1778; appointed justice of peace there, 1783, and continued such until 1795; represented Reading, in General Assembly of Ct., May, 1783, '84, and 1790, Oct., 1790, May, 1794, Oct., 1794, and May, 1795. In 1795, sold his property at Reading, and removed to Bridgeport, Ct., but d. at R., 1799. He was one of the most celebrated lawyers of his day, and had a very large and extensive practice.
