John and Elizabeth each grew up in their birthplaces of Wallaceburg and Ridgetown, only 33 miles apart. Where they met is unknown, but they married in Chatham, the city midway between their hometowns. John was only 22 years, a machinist by trade; she was 24 when they were coupled. Four months later their son Donald was born in Ridgetown, Kent county.
