Lavina and Benjamin's first son died March 21. 1905 at the age of 13 days. After this sad moment in their life, they got back up and on July 5th 1906 they started their family over with Melville, or "Sparky" as he was known, helped to put the sparks back into Ben and Lavina's lives again.

Meaford Paper Notice; --- MRS. BEN VAIL DIES IN ST CATHARINES; --- 
Mrs. Benjamin Vail, 84, a lifelong resident of the Meaford area, died in St. Catharines on Saturday. She had been ill for two months.
    Mrs. Vail was the former Lavina benedict of Meaford. She married Benjamin Vail in 1900. he operated a blacksmith shop in Meaford for many years.
    Mrs. Vail was an ardent hockey fan. One son, Melville "Sparky was one of Meaford's first professional hockey players. He played for new York Rangers from 1926 to 1937. Another son Kenneth played for the Newmarket Redmen when they won the Junior "A" Championship 1932/33 season. Mrs Vail has two grandchildren, Terry and George who have played Junior "A" hockey.
    Mrs. Vail is survived by four sons, Melville of Toronto, Kenneth of Schumack, Gerald and Douglas of Toronto, One daughter Olive Mrs. R. G. Johnson, of St. Catharines and one brother, Herbert Benedict of Collingwood. Mrs. Vail was a member of the Baptist Church.
