---+++_Life of Mary Deaver Benedict_

Mary (Mamie) Deaver Benedict was born July 26, 1857, the first child of David and Harriott Benedict, while her father was attending Case Medical School in Cleveland, Ohio. With the coming of the Civil War after his graduation, her father volunteered in the Union army and served the duration of the war. The thought of losing her father apparently bothered her. In one of his letters home to his wife, Doctor Benedict mentions that Hattie and her older sister Mary had asked about death.

Mamie attended Norwalk public schools. She never married and lived in her parents' house all her life. She cared for her mother, who probably suffered from Alzheimer’s until her death, then traveled the world for many years, visiting Europe and China. In her later years, she also developed Alzheimer's, a disease that became know in the family as the “Benedict curse.” She died December 12, 1931 in Norwalk, OH. [1]
