He was a farmer, like the rest of his brothers; but, in his later years, he began the manufacture of hats in a small building in Danbury, Ct.--thus founding, in 1780, the hatting trade, for which Danbury has since become noted. (See Francis's History of the Hatting Trade, Danbury, 1860.) He represented Danbury in general assembly of Connecticut in 1790; was selectman 1783, 1784 and 1786. He was one of the sufferers by the sacking of Danbury by the British troops in 1777, and was allowed, in May, 1792, by the state of Connecticut, œ169 17s. for damages sustained by him. He d. He became a partner, in early life, in a mercantile house of New Orleans, engaged in the Mexican and West India trade. He was afterwards in the crockery business in New York. He is President of the Lawrence Rosendale Cement Co. of New York, and a director in the Seventh Ward National Bank, which latter position he has held for many years.
