Life Story of Agnes Caroline Benedict

Agnes (Aggie) Caroline Benedict was born 11 February, 1861 in Norwalk, Ohio, daughter of David and Harriott Benedict. She grew up during the Civil War, where her father served as a surgeon in the Union Army.

Aggie was educated in the Norwalk Public Schools and wanted to be a doctor, but her father would not allow it. Instead, she apprenticed in his pharmacy, passed the state exams, and became a licensed pharmacist.

She married Frank Wickham, a reporter with the Norwalk Reflector, on October 14, 1886. They had five children. In 1907, the Reflector went into bankruptcy and Frank became editor and receiver of the paper until it was sold in 1909. He then became Financial Agent for the American Protective Tariff League in New York where he worked until 1927. During this period, he spent most of his time away from home. Aggie became involved in the Sally De Forest Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, of which she, her siblings and her daughter were charter members. She also researched and wrote a family history of the Benedict and Wickham families and made handwritten copies for each of her children.

Frank retired in 1927 and returned to Norwalk, but Aggie did not enjoy a long retirement with him. By that time, she was probably becoming afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. She died March 8, 1934 in Norwalk. [1]
