Amanda’s Early Years

Amanda and William

William McCallum was the son of Duncan McCallum and Margaret Legget, his younger brother Duncan McCallum married Amanda's younger sister Almira Benedict.

It would appear that Amanda and William moved about quite a bit and passed on that 'wanderlust' trait to their ten children.

So far, William and Amanda have not been found on the 1861 Canadian census. However it is believed they may have been in Mount Forest, Wellington County in the early 1860's.

They obviously moved back to Hastings County by the 1871 census and appear in Thurlow Township, Hastings County. In 1881 they are in Madoc Township, Hastings County.

Now, because a number of their children moved to the South Western United States and the year these children give for their 'immigration' is 1889, then it is possible that at some point Amanda and William and their entire family left Canada. Given they could not be found on the 1891 Census it is probable.

William and Amanda however returned to Canada but it would seem at least half their children did not. William and Amanda can be found on the 1901 Canadian Census in Tweed, Hungerford Township, Hastings County, Ontario.
