Howland, Henry - Plymouth Colony, p.310

-A brother of 1620 Mayflower passenger, John Howland, Henry Howland was in Plymouth at least as early as 25 March 1633, when his name appears on the tax list, and he was also on the original freeman list. On 8 April 1633, Walter Harris had his indenture transferred to Henry Howland (PCR 1:13). On 5 January 1635/36 Henry became the constable of Duxbury (PCR 1:36). He was frequently a member of trial and grand juries (PCR, passim). On 3 June 1657 he, John Tompson, Morris Truant, Ralph Allen, and Thomas Greenfield refused to serve on the grand jury (PCR 3:115). On 2 March 1657/58, the same day his brother Arthur was fined Đ4 for permitting a Quaker meeting in his house and Đ5 for resisting the constable of Marshfield in the execution of his office, Henry Howland was fined ten shillings for entertaining a meeting in his house [p.311] contrary to court orders (PCR 3:129). On 7 June 1659 the court, referring to an order disenfranching Quakers and other offenders, gave notice to four men to appear in court the following August, and on 6 October 1659 Howland had his freeman status taken away from him (PCR 3:167, 176). On 1 May 1660 Henry Howland was charged with entertaining another man's wife in his house after her husband had complained to him, and for permitting a Quaker meeting in his house and entertaining a foreign Quaker. He stiffly denied the first charge, and the court noted that the evidence "did not appeer to make it out," but he was convicted on the Quaker charges. On the same day Lt. Samuel Nash complained against Howland for stopping up a highway (PCR 3:186). On 2 October 1660 he was fined Đ4 for twice having Quaker meetings at his house (PCR 3:201). On 3 June 1668 he was a highway surveyor for Duxbury (PCR 4:181). He made his will 28 November 1670, inventory 14January 1670/71, and he named his wife Mary (her surname is not known; they were possibly married in England), his sons Zoeth, Joseph, John, and Samuel, and his daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, and Abigail (MD 19:32). An article by Robert S. Wakefield and the late Robert M. Sherman, "Henry Howland of Duxbury, Mass., 1633, His Children and His Grandchildren," will appear in a forthcoming issue of NGSQ.

The Howlands were members of the Essex Family. Many of their descendants emigrated to the American Colonies. Son, John Howland, was one of the passengers on the first voyage of the ship "Mayflower" in 1620. The Howlands, of Fen Stanton, lived near the college town of Cambridge, north of London about 9.5 miles. Their descendants include many prominent and notable American people, including Jennie Jerome Churchill, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Johnny Carson, George Plimton, Edith Carow Roosevelt (wife of Theodore); Henry Cabot Lodge; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

NOTE conflict of information on wives and children between Vol I and Vol II

Source: Massachusetts and Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis, Vol. II

Fen Stanton is about 1-2 miles south of St. Ives, near to Huntingdon, in the area northwest of Cambridge. Huntingdonshire county no longer exists. " Howland " was a location phrase for ' Land at the ancient burial mound '. This alluded to a prehistoric tomb where the ancestors farmed. The Howland coat-of-arms, granted in 1584, has two black bars below three blackrampant lions on a silver shield. Buried in church cemetery in Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, England Henry Howland, of the Parish of Fenny Stanton (Fen Stanton now known as Fenstanton, nine miles north of Cambridge,England) Huntingdonshire, was a yeoman who died at Fen Stanton on 17 May 1635. His wife, Margaret, was buried at Fen Stanton, 31 July 1629. They had seven children: Arthur, John, Margaret, Humphrey, George, Simon and Henry. In 1963, the John Howland Society of Plymouth, MA, erected a bronze tablet in the Fenstanton Church "In memory of HENRY HOWLAND who was buried in the churchyard of this parish on 17th May 1635 - Father of John Howland a pilgrim to America on the Mayflower 1620." Erected by the Pilgrim Hohn Howland Society 17th May 1966 The "Old Colony Howlands" descend from his three sons: Arthur, John and Henry. Arthur and Henry came in either the FORTUNE in 1621 or the ANN 1623 (per "Certain Comeovers" by Henry Howland Crapo, Volumne I.) Their brother John was the first of the family to reach America, coming on the original MAYFLOWER. While there is no verification, possibly due to the state of panic caused in England at this time by the epidemic of plague (Black Death) at the time, many researchers believe that most of the Howland family that stayed in England died of the plague and possibly the only survivors were the three brothers (John, Arthur and Henry) who immigrated to America. parents could be John Howland and Emma Revell, "The lineage from this John Howland was at one time thought to include the Mayflower passenger as a grandson of this John. That part was supposedly disproved, but part of that lineage matches what we have here. It is best to look at this part of the lineage with a grain of salt, but if further corroborative evidence comes along, there is more herein."

John Howland 2nd: Born during the early reign of Henry VIII, John Howland and Anne Greenway had eleven sons and one daughter and all historians agree that all Howlands in England were descended from this pair. The eldest son , Richard Howland, Doctor of Divinity and Archbishop of Peterborough, was granted the Family Coat of Arms June 10, 1584. Historians say he delivered the funeral sermon of Mary Queen of Scots. John's will was proven April 1550. The name Howland is found only in Essex England and was originally found only in Newport, Wicken, Essex, England. Both George and Humphrey Howland died before 1653, as Humphrey's widow Annie was executrix of both their wills. She died December 20, 1653. Humphrey was a draper of London. George lived at St. Donstons, East London.

Footnotes

Starr did not register the births of any of his daughters at all. All records for sons born only indicate "Male Child Benedict," (son of Starr Benedict)

Barbour Collection does list his father George's birth, as does LDS microfilm LDS 1435525, Danbury, Fairfield County, CT. No official record of George's marriage found. No official record of his death found. LDS 1435525, Danbury, Fairfield County, CT list mother Dorcas's birth and death information, however no Barbour Collection information found, and no spouse information found. No information of Dorcas's father, John Vail found. No information at all of who her mother may have been. Mention made, but no records of birth of his children found. Chd: 1) Eliakim Starr-No official records of his birth or 1st/2nd marriage found. m records with Ellen F Gilmore found, stating his 2nd m, her 1st. am inclined to believe that Vol I with m to Sophia Carey is not true, but m to Deliah/Deliah is proven through Census Records, thus, first three children were born with Deliah/Deliah

Note: third child, Sarah Francis Benedict m to Carlton Leslie Graves lists age at marriage as 22, which would have her b ca 1861.

NOTE: Although evidence proves otherwise, am leaving 3 wives in this record for Eliakim "Starr". Further research may prove there were three, but records for only two can be found at this time, Deliah/Delia and Ellen F Gilmore

My grandparents were Eliakim Starr and Sophia (Carey) Benedict of Danbury, CT. Their son, George Israel, was my father.

After the death of my grandmother about 1861, my grandfather married Ella Gilmore, and on May 7th 1876 a son, Walter Francis, was born in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

I was a little girl when he left Connecticut for the West, but I remember him, and knew that for many years he and my brother, Clarence Lewis Benedict corresponded. Signed Elizabeth Benedict Spencer, notorized Cheshire, CT 21Mar1960. Katherine A. Costello, Notary Public for County and State.
