Julia Etta’s Early Years
Julia Etta and Merritt Daniel Booth
Julia and Merritt were married in Newton, Mass on August 4, 1910 by Rev. Robert W. VanKinff. Their wedding book is in the possession of her granddaughter, Shirley Pineo.
The Final Years for Julia Etta
Julia's married years were very stressful for her. She discovered that her husband was a bigimist while she was pregrant with her second daughter, Gwendoline. She returned home to Belmont, Hants Co. for the birth so her daughter would be born a Canadian. She found work in Truro as a housekeeper for an elderly lady, Mrs. Dawson, who had a son named Fred Dawson. Fred tried to court Julia but since she was still married, she resisted his charms and finally she took her two daughters and fled to the United States to find work. She went to work at a Girl's School in Wellsley, Mass. Fred continued to write her and try to persuade her to divorce her husband but this was not an easy thing to do in 1920. However, her other choice was not the right answer, either. On December 3, 1920, Julia took her own life by swallowing poison, in front of her 7 year old daughter, Gwendoline.
