The Parents of Mary Benedict
Mary's Early Years
From the small excerpts of two letters, one written by Elias Benedict, and one by Charles Benedict, mention is made of their sister Mary. Up until finding this paper, in Jennie Pringle's research notes, no other mention of Ard and Hannah ever having a daughter Mary, had come to light.
It would of course make sense that Ard and Hannah would name a daughter "Mary" given Ard's mother was Mary and the couple did name a daughter Phoebe, presumably after Hannah's mother.
Maybe the lack of information passed on about Mary Benedict was because Mary, like her older brother William, simply left the area after a marriage, never to return. And so, nieces and nephews never knew of her or knew very little to pass on to the next generation.
(NOTE) It is possible that Mary could also be the second born daughter of Ard's brother Smedley Benedict and Catherine Dafoe, as we have no other infoe on her marriage to Alexander McMillan. The birth dates are close and the marriage to James Jarmin, in Napanee, puts her in the area where Smedley's son Ard was born, in 1843, as mentioned in Ard's Obituary.
Mary and James
Through some digging, it was found that a Mary Benedict married a James Jarmin, in Napanee in 1847. In tracking this couple there are some rather striking coincidences but still, no definitive proof to indicate that this Mary Benedict, who married James Jarmin, is the daughter of Ard and Hannah.
Migration to the United States
Mary Benedict and her husband James Jarmin and family migrated to the United States in 1866. However, their oldest son, William Albert Jarmin apparently stayed behind. Later in the fall of 1869, he joined their Napanee neighbors the George Bull family and migrated to Linn County, Iowa arriving on Nov 6, 1689. Then in the spring of 1871 the Bull family along with William Albert Jarmin headed for Nebraska and stopped in Polk County, about 10 miles south of Platte River and filed claims in what was to become known as "Canada Township" near where the town of Shelby later was settled. At some point after this Mary Benedict and James Jarmin joined their son (and his wife, Sophronia Bull whom he married Oct 11, 1871). By the 1880 census Mary and James were living in Canada township, Polk County, Nebraska.
The Final Years for Mary
Death of Mary Benedict Jarmin
Mary Benedict-Jarmin died in Oregon in 1905. Her death certificate says she was born in New York, yet on every census (1861 Canadian, 1870 USA, 1880 USA, 1900 USA)Mary Benedict-Jarmin indicates she was born in Canada. Further she says her Dad was born in Vermont! Unfortunately Mary Benedict-Jarmin's death certificate does not mention her parent's names.
