  • Hobby, Mary, age 23, b female, NY (1827)(wife of James)

This is a revision and clarification of my earlier comments regarding the Allen Hobby family cited above. The point I attempted and failed to make clearly was that this Hobby family is not the family of William’s wife Martha.

According to Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, vol.I, p149, William married Martha Wood, b. 24 Feb 1781, d. 27 Mar 1862. Although no dates are given for Martha Wood in Under Old Rooftrees, on p.156 it states “Martha married William Benedict…”, the Martha here referring to the daughter of William and Hannah (Bennett) Wood. The facts would indicate that the reason her gravestone, which is next to William’s in the Old School Baptist Cemetery, reads Martha HOBBIE and is inscribed born Feb 24, 1781 died Mar 27,1862 (the exact same dates as Martha Wood’s), is that the two Marthas are actually one-in-the-same and that the name HOBBIE entered the story when Martha (Wood) Benedict remarried sometime after 1817 when William died and before 1820. William’s wife and mother of his children was, strictly speaking, Martha Wood and not Hobbie as is found in some sources.

As to the identity of Mr. Hobby/Hobbie, I would like to propose that Martha’s second husband was Drake Hobby, b 5 Feb 1771 Greenwich, Fairfield County, CT, son of David and Hannah (Seymour) Hobby. Drake’s wife Deborah Reeve, b. 31 May 1777, d. 28 Aug 1817 Blooming Grove, Orange County, NY, was the daughter of Selah and Keturah (Strong) Reeve. The U.S. Censuses for Warwick, Orange County, NY yielded much of the evidence upon which I built my conclusion. I encourage anyone who is interested in the details to contact me directly. -- CarolPerry - 15 Nov 2008

  • Benedict, Martha Hobbie, b. Feb 24, 1781, d. Mar 27, 1862, wife

Although not absolutely conclusive, there is very strong indication that Martha b ca 1781 in the census records was the mother of Rev William Lewis Benedict, and the grandmother of Sarah and Sally Benedict, they having both lived in the household that was next door to their brother Rev Wm L Benedict. James Hobby is indicated as being a brother of Martha1781, the uncle of Sarah and Sally.

There should be no doubt that the mother of Rev. William Lewis Benedict was Martha (Wood), b. 24 Feb 1781 (pp. 149-150, Gen. of the Benedicts in America, Vol. 1). She was the mother, not the grandmother,of Sarah/Sally. James B. Hobbie was not Martha’s brother but her son by her second husband; he was the half-brother, not the uncle, of Sarah/Sally. -- CarolPerry - 04 Nov 2008

Daughter Sally Benedict

FROM "ROOFTREES" by Eliza Benedict Hornby

During the early summer of 1824 a party of relatives started on an ox drawn covered wagon trip to visit the family of Benjamin Burt of Cheminy. Sally Benedict, sister of William L, was in the party. She was a very little girl for her age, about 16 and our only record came from her. The trail was so rough no one could ride and they had to walk both ways it took twelve days each way. Their provision wagon was attacked every night by animals after their meat.

As a little girl someone gave Sally Benedict a sheet of paper about 6 x 8 and of good quality. She thought it was beautiful and never had an occasion important enough to use it. It was among her treasures 70 years later when she passed away.

NOTE: Dau Sally omitted as a child born to William and Martha. If not for the article written by Eliza Benedict Hornby, her existance would not be known, and the mysterious Sally Benedict in the 1870 census would not have been identified.

It is very doubtful that there is a “mysterious” Sally Benedict. Sarah, b. 1808, and Sally are one-in-the-same persons. The U.S. Censuses for Warwick of 1850 through 1870 support this conclusion. The census of 1850 shows Martha Hobby 69, Sally Benedict 41, and James B. Hobbie 29; in 1860 their household consists of James B. Hobby 38 and Martha 79, Sarah Benedict 52; and in 1870 it consists of James B. Hobbie 39 and Sarah Benedict 61, Martha having died in 1862. The ten year age increment for Sarah/Sally indicates they are the same person. -- CarolPerry - 04 Nov 2008

NOTE: Spelling of surname Hobby later changed to Hobbie

NOTE: per cemetery records, name was Mary Wood, per Eliza Benedict Hornby records, name was Martha Wood
