Russell Irvine Smith was born November 6, 1915 in Davidson, Saskatchewan. He was the first of five children born to Rodney and Emma.

Russell Smith married Bessie Carsell November 6, 1946 in Wainwright, Alberta. They have four children: Merritt, Sharon, Maureen and Roslyn. In about 1990 Russell and Bessie moved to Langley, B.C. On July 12, 1994 Russell passed away in Langley, B.C. at the age of 78.
