Although he spent most of his youth in Danbury, his parents also moved for a time to Harlem, New York, where his brother Jonas was born. [1] In 1817, David accompanied his parents, two younger brothers Daniel and Jonas, his older sister Clarissa and younger sister Eliza Ann to the Firelands in northern Ohio. After a long and tedious journey, they arrived at their new home on a sand ridge where his parents founded the town of Norwalk. [2] It is possible that David found life on the frontier burdensome. At one point, David ran away from home because he was tired of polishing a visiting bishop’s boots. [3] In any event, in 1822, he moved back to Danbury and engaged in the retail trade. He also owned much of the land around Norwalk, OH. [4] On September 24, 1832, David married in Danbury Mrs. Mary Booth Boughton, a widow who was the daughter of Friend Starr and Esther Booth. They had a daughter, whom they named Mary Boughton Benedict. In late June 1834, David’s wife and daughter became seriously ill. Mary Booth Benedict died on June 27, and her daughter six days later on July 3. David never remarried and he died January 16, 1843. [5] ---++ _Footnotes_ 1.
