---++ _Life of Eliza Ann Benedict_

Eliza Ann Benedict was born October 27, 1812 in Danbury, Connecticut, the youngest child of Platt Benedict and Sarah !DeForest. [1] In 1817, she accompanied her parents, her sister, Clarissa and three brothers David, Daniel, and Jonas, to the Firelands in Northern Ohio. After a long and tedious journey, they arrived at their new home on a sand ridge where her parents founded the town of Norwalk. [2]

In 1818, with her brother, she attended a school just outside of town. The schoolhouse was a crude building _made of logs, with a chimney of sticks plastered inside, the fire occupying nearly the whole side of the building. The seats were made of split logs, the flat side up, resting upon sticks, which were driven into them in a sloping direction. The desks were coarse, un-planed boards, running the whole length of the three unoccupied sides. The scholars sat with their faces to the wall._ The teacher of this school in the summer of 1818 was Ann Boalt. [3] Beginning in 1820, Eliza and her brother attended the first school in the village of Norwalk in a shanty on their parent’s property, built two years before by the workers who made bricks for their new house. [4]

Eliza married William Brewster on May 1, 1832 in Norwalk. She had two sons and a daughter, all of whom died young. She died August 17, 1840 in Norwalk, Ohio at the age of 27 and was buried at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Norwalk. Later her remains were moved to Woodlawn Cemetery. [5]
