James ’s Early Years

James m Thankful, dau of Ephraim Lockwood and Thankful Grumman on 5 or 25,1762. They had 12 children, 9 of whom grew to maturity. Farmer & Shoemaker. He had a small shop attached to his house and there, with a number of apprentices, he made shoes for the NY market. There were only about four styles of shoes, all work performed by hand, no practical sewing machine coming into vogue until 1846.
James Military History
James served in 7th Reg. Watson's Co. for 3 years (D.A.R. Lineage Book states he enlisted 1777, served under Capt Titus Watson's Co., see pension statement of military record.
James Later Years
He lived with his son, Caleb, in the old homestead until his 95th year and had seen his numerous family all married, their children and children's children growing up around him. He died 17Jun1838. The old homestead and eight acres were sold in 1842 to Nathan Hanford, who lived just west on the sharp turn in the hill at the junction on the present Garabaldi Lane. The bulk of the farm on the south side of the street was sold to Andrew Benedict.
James was buried originally at Brushy Ridge and his headstone was relocated to Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan, Fairfield co., Connecticut, Plot: A-271. The inscription reads:
