---+++_The Parents of James_
The limited evidence suggests that Smedley Benedict was born in Grand Isle, Vermont. This evidence being the very early Vermont Censuses, and a marriage for one of Smedley's sisters, Anna, both of which indicate Joshua Benedict, Smedley's father, and family were in Chittenden County, Vermont from 1792 to approximately 1805. Betty !McIntyre mentioned that Smedley William Benedict was born 1799 in the United States, then came to Canada. It appears Smedley was the youngest child of Joshua and Mary Benedict.
The Benedicts settled in Lennox & Addington County of Ontario, then known as Upper Canada, in the early 1800’s.According to White, Smedley was a resident of Victoria District in 1845, at the age of 45. So his birth date would have been between 1799 and 1801. Hastings is the adjoining county to the west of Lennox & Addington County. 

Smedley Benedict married Catherine Dafoe about 1824/25 having their first daughter, Elizabeth December 15, 1825. Catherine’s family is well recorded in the United Empire Loyalist’s records of Ontario. In about 1828, Smedley Benedict was enrolled in the Second Regiment of the Lennox Militia under the command of a Captain Archibald !McDonnell. This is according to the Militia General order dated 7 Nov. 1828.

Smedley & Catherine Benedict, along with all ten of their children, appear on the 1851 Canadian Census in Richmond Township, Lennox & Addington County, Upper Canada. At some point after 1851, Smedley & Catherine and their family moved westward, from Lennox & Addington County to Grey County, Ontario. 

By 1861, Smedley & Catherine Benedict together with their youngest five children, appear in St. Vincent Township, Grey County, Ontario. Smedley and Catherine resided in St. Vincent Township, on a farm, until Smedley's death in 1867. 

 

---+++_James' Early Years_
James worked on the family farm until the death of his father. Sometime after he and his mother, moved west into Elderslie Twp., Bruce County, and took up property in the village of Chesley.

It seems in 1865, Daniel Benedict, A. Benedict (possibly Ard) and James Benedict were all living in the Township of Sydenham, on Con., B, Lot 3,taken from, A History of the County Of Grey by E. L. Marsh, from page 436. Reproduced from The Gazetter of the County published by W. E. Smith of Owen Sound in 1865.

Probably after Smedley died in 1867, Ard James and Catherine moved to Chesley, in Bruce County while Daniel stayed on the original farm.

Sarah was born in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario, on July 15, 1856, the daughter of Robert Smith Williamette and wife Ann Gistrope, both born England. While still a child the family moved to Chesley, Elderslie Twp., Bruce Co., where she grew into a tall, strong, very stern and impressive woman. She met and married James Benedict  in Chesley, Elderslie Twp., Bruce Co., Ontario. They decided to move back to Woodstock, about 1886 where they lived out the rest of their lives.

(Sept. 18, 1906) -- Woodstock Sentinal; -- Death of James Benedict;
James Benedict a well known, East Zorra Township farmer, died last evening, about 6 o'clock at his home on Lot 9 Con. 14.
The late Mr. Benedict had been in poor health for the past two years and his demise was not expected by the family or friends. He was born in Grey County but had been a resident of Woodstock for many years. He is survived by a widow and nine children. The deceased was sixty-one years of age. The funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon to the Baptist Cemetery in this city, at half past two. Rev. Mr. Proctor of the Oxford Street Baptist Church, will conduct the services.

Daily Centinal-Review of Woodstock, October 10, 1930. - - Funeral of Mrs. Benedict.
    THE funeral of Sarah Benedict, widow of the late James Benedict, who died in Victoria hospital, London on Tuesday, Oct 07, 1930, was held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 from George E. Logan funeral home, London, with Rev. G. V. Crofoot, of Adelaide Street Baptist church, officiating. Interment was made in Woodstock Baptist cemetery.
    The deceased was born in Woodstock 75 years ago, the daughter of the late Robert Williamette. While still a child the family moved to Chesley were she resided until her marriage to James Benedict, who predeceased her 24 years ago.They then moved to Woodstock, where she was a resident for more than 40 years. For many years she had been a faithful member of the Oxford Street Baptist church. Over four years ago, she had a serious illness from which she never recovered, having been a patient of Victoria Hospital for four months before her death.
     Surviving are four sons, James of Stratford; Charles of Preston; Albert and Russel, of Ruthilda, Sask., and five daughters, Mrs. C. Hodges of Detroit; Mrs. W. J. Koehler, of Petrolia; Mrs. E Weiler, of Woodstock; Mrs. H. Morgan, of this city, And Mrs. B. Mcfadyen, of Ruthilda, Sask.; also a brother, J. A. Williamette, of Washington D.C.
    The interment ceremony here was attended by many old friends and acquaintances of the deceased, both from the neighborhood and outside points. Beautiful floral tributes were indicative of the sympathy of relatives and friends.
     The bearers were: James Benedict, Charles Benedict, Roy Hawkins, George Harvey, Harry Morgan and William Keeler.

BENEDICT -- In loving memory of Mrs. James Benedict, who passed away two years ago today. 
She with patience her sickness bore. Hoping the Lord would her restore. But he it was who thought it best, To take her to her Heavenly Rest.
   Ever remembered by Daughters and Sons

Sarah died of myocarditis which she had suffered for some years. The final four months of her life she lived with her daughter, Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Morgan, 1175 Princess Avenue, London Ontario.

Both James and Sarah are buried in Woodstock Baptist Cemetery in Woodstock Ontario.  Their gravesite is forty feet directly beside Catharine Dafoe, James' mother.
