Rebecca's parents fled the upheaval in Connecticut following the American Revolution.  Her father sought refuge with other Tory stalwarts in the still-British colonies of New Brunswick and then to Nova Scotia.  Her mother was from Long Island in New York state.

Little is known of Rebecca as a young woman.

Dawson Patterson married Rebecca on August 4, 1803 in the town of Aylesford. The marriage bond was signed June 30, 1803.  Jabez Benedict also signed the bond (NSARM Microfilm 15927).
