The Parents of Samuel

Samuel’s Early Years

Samuel Benedict and Mary Dibble

Mary, a daughter of John Dibble, was born September 28, 1746 and died August 24, 1825.

In 1771, Samuel married Mary and they resided at Sharon, Vermont where all the children were raised. He was there in 1780. See Hall's Vermont, page 387 for an account of his escape from the Indians1.

They settled in Hull City and South Hull in 18011. Samuel owned 600 acres along Mountain Road. He first built a shack, then a fine residence in 1805. See Anson A. Guard's 1906 publication1. In September, 1972, a bronze commemorative plaque was unveiled on the old farm by two, sixth generation descendents of Samuel and Mary, Mary-Louise Benedict (age 16) and Brenda McKay? (age 14). Mr. Philip McDougall? Veale, married to a Benedict descendant, of the Historical Society of the Gatineau, and the National Capital Commission, jointly initiated the memorial.
