The Parents of Smith

Smith’s Early Years

Smith was born in Peekskill, Westchester county in upper New York State. By his 20's, he and his parents had moved to new land opportunities in Upper Canada (now Ontario).

Smith and Margaret Cole

Margaret, born on Feb. 2, 1810 at Adolphustown, Lennox & Addington twp, Ontario, was the daughter of Peter Cole. They married on May 13, 1828 and she died five years later on Nov. 13, 18331.

Smith and Dorcas (Trickey) Cole

Dorcas Trickey was born on May 20, 1813 at Sophiasburg, Prince Edward county, Ontario. She first married a Peter Cole on Feb. 8, 1830. He died on Oct. 19, 1833, three years after the marriage1.

Dorcas, the widow, then married Smith Benedict on March 25, 1835, about a year and a half after his first wife Margaret passed away. The marriage was witnessed by Simeon Cole and Zachariah Cole (perhaps her father-in-law and/or her brother-in-law). She and Smith resided at Shannonville in Canada. She died at the age of 75 years, on October 20, 1888 at Tyendinaga. Smith died the next year1.

We do not know as of yet the relationship if any between Margaret Cole and Dorcas Cole.
