James married Margaret Gilpin in 1866. At some point they moved to South Simcoe County where he was recorded in the 1871 census as a carpenter. Later he is reported to have operated a mill near Stroud in Simcoe County. Both James and Margaret died in Flos Township, Simcoe County, and were buried there.
